1 Germany
No publisher given Staple bound card covers Very Good
64pp Semi-official booklet that it was issued to troops prior to entering Germany in the latter stages of the war when our armies have barely entered Germany and Hitler and the Nazi regime have not yet been overthrown. It has nothing to do with military operations and deals only with civilian life in life in Germany, and how to behave with the German civilian population. (Don't be too ready to listen to stories told by attractive women. They may be under orders.)( Marriages between British forces and Germans are, as you know, forbidden.) A fascinating and often (with hindsight) amusing piece of piece of military ephemera. Covers a bit grubby, but otherwise very good 103168

18 Bower, Tom Klaus Barbie: Butcher of Lyons
Michael Joseph 1984 0718123271 / 9780718123277 First Edition Hardback with dust wrapper Very Good Very Good Illustrated with black-and-white photographs and maps
Light shelf wear only. Wrapper now protected in removable clear acetate sleeve. 255pp including glossary, source notes, bibliography and index. Nikolaus 'Klaus' Barbie (1913 – 1991) was an SS-Hauptsturmführer and Gestapo member. He was known as the Butcher of Lyons for having personally tortured French prisoners of the Gestapo while stationed in Lyons, France. After the war, United States intelligence services employed him for their anti-Marxist efforts and also helped him escape to South America. The West German intelligence agency, recruited him, and he may have helped the CIA capture Argentine revolutionary Che Guevara in 1967. Barbie is also suspected of having a hand in the Bolivian coup d'état orchestrated by Luis García Meza Tejada in 1980. After the fall of the dictatorship, Barbie no longer had the protection of the Bolivian government and in 1983 was extradited to France, where he was convicted of war crimes and died in prison. 779001

"Now am I happy, snug and warm!
For all in scorn of the wintry weather,
And heedless quite of the howling storm,
My books and I are alone together.
