A history of both house and family, divided into three parts, beginning with the founder and original builders, Queen Elizabeth's stalwart William Cecil, Lord Burleigh, and his son Robert, first Earl of Salisbury. The second part traces the history through the next 200 years, and the third covers the late Victorian and Edwardian periods when the 3rd Marquess, Prime Minister for 14 years and one of the greatest and most enigmatic statesmen of all time, was in the ascendant. The author, a direct descendant of William Cecil, the great Lord Burleigh, who built Hatfield, vividly portrays his ancestors, his family history, and that of the house itself.

"Now am I happy, snug and warm!
For all in scorn of the wintry weather,
And heedless quite of the howling storm,
My books and I are alone together.
